Holiday Traditions in Telluride

The holidays in Telluride are special. Telluride is a unique former Victorian mining town nestled deep in a box canyon amidst Colorado’s stunning Rocky Mountains which offers visitors from all over the world a popular ski and golf resort destination. The historic district boasts such landmarks as the Sheridan Opera House, originally built in 1913, and the Telluride Historical museum, where you can learn about the area’s local history in a converted hospital from 1896. Telluride’s shop’s and restaurants are festive, and its historic main street is brightly lit for the Holiday Season.

A special event many look forward to every year is the Telluride New Year’s Eve Torchlight Parade.

December 24th and December 31st are evenings to make sure your outside around 6:25pm. You’ll hear a loud bang – dynamite (just like they used in the mining days) and then you’ll know the Torchlight Parade is starting, look to the top of the mountain for flashing red lights. This Telluride holiday tradition takes place at approximately 6:30 p.m. and involves Telluride Ski Resort snow patrol employees on skis and snowboards taking a run down the mountain on Coonskin, Telluride Trail, and into Mountain Village carrying blazing red torches. This amazing display can be seen from any location in downtown Telluride.

Mountain Village also hosts a firework show on December 31st, best viewed from Gondola or the plaza in the Village Core.

New Year’s Eve the place to be at midnight is on Colorado Avenue in front of our historic courthouse. Townspeople and guests alike flood outside to main street to celebrate New Year’s Eve – Telluride Style.
